Kidd could bring four past or present Mavericks stars to the New York Knicks

According to Jonah Kubichek, a reporter from the US sports media NBA analysis network. The New York Knicks have been associated with Jason Kidd, and as a replacement for Thibodeau, he might bring some Mavericks elements.

The New York Knicks fired Thibodeau after their most successful season in 2026. While the Knicks have interviewed several substitutes, current Dallas head coach Jason Kidd appears to be the frontrunner, ending his NBA career with the Knicks. And after the Mavericks traded Doncic without consulting Kidd, he may be dissatisfied with the team. New York has a star-studded lineup, a willing boss to spend money, and has the largest media market in the league. If the Knicks want to sign Kidd, it's hard to say no, he can bring some familiar faces that play with him or play for him in Dallas.

Jason Kidd may hire Steve Nash

The best point guard ever after Doncic is Kidd and Nash. While they never shared the stadium in Dallas, both of them competed in the All-Star Game with the Mavericks and were teammates of the Phoenix Suns. Kidd was the only one to win the championship, but Nash scored his first two All-Star games with the Mavericks. Nash coached part of three seasons with the Brooklyn Nets and is currently co-host of LeBron James’ Mind the Game podcast. If Kidd goes to New York, he is expected to bring his own staff, and Nash may be a valuable addition to help continue to realize Brunson’s potential. The Knicks could add key depth players, the Knicks lacked depth to compete with the Indiana Pacers, and Thibodeau’s reluctance to play his second squad was the main reason for his sack. The Mavericks don’t have many free agents, although Dinwiddie will be an unrestricted free agent and has been associated with teams with poor performances in the defenders. While Brunson and McBride were stable with the Knicks, Kidd had a special liking for Dinwiddie, giving him a start after Irving fell down due to an ACL injury. Dinwiddie is a shooter but also a reliable general on the court, the kind of player that a team with hopes of winning hopes to come down from the bench, and the Knicks need to strengthen their depth. While he won't move drastically, it makes sense that he will follow his head coach to a larger market.

Kidd could bring an elite shooter

Last season, the Knicks made a bench three-point shooting percentage of 35.8% but ranked last in terms of attempts, mainly because they were at the bottom in playing time. Last season, Seth Curry led the NBA with 45.6% three-point shooting. Curry has played for the Mavericks three times, although he has only 36 games under Kidd. Still, he is a veteran who can contribute on the bench, shooting off the ball with McBride or Dinwiddie. Curry will come in the form of a veteran’s minimum contract, and if the Knicks don’t re-sign Precis Achuva, Deron Wright, Cameron Payne or Landry Shamet, they will have a way to sign Curry a team-friendly short-term contract. Kidd has proven he's willing to give his bench a lot of opportunities, so New York needs to prioritize adding depth players he can trust. Curry, like Dinwiddie, doesn’t play a big role as long as the starter stays healthy, although he can work with his old coach to compete for the championship, which will be refreshing after spending last season with the Charlotte Hornets.

Kidd can recruit a Mavericks hero, Jason Terry, who played eight seasons with the Mavericks, spending most of his time with Jason Kidd. Thanks in large part to Terry averaging 18 points in the 2011 Finals, Kidd won his only championship against the Miami Heat. Terry is a Dallas hero who took over the Mavericks’ G League front desk after his player career, and has since worked as an assistant coach in the G League, NCAA and NBA. Reuniting with one of his most accomplished teammates of all time with the Knicks would be a dream, and spending a season as Kidd’s right-hand man would end up being a head coach.

While Dirk Nowitzki is the greatest Dallas Mavericks of all time, Kidd and Terry’s 2011 performance in the NBA Finals gave them a place in the history of the Mavericks, and even if Kidd stays in Dallas, it seems only a matter of time before Terry joins Kidd to enter the NBA Finals again.
