Former Manchester United defender Rojo was terminated by Boca, and the 35-year-old veteran faced unemployment dilemma

On August 9, 2025, Argentine giant Boca youth issued a brief statement through a social media platform, officially announcing the termination of the contract with defender Marcos Rojo. The 35-year-old former Manchester United star has since become a free agent.

statement read: "Marcos Rojo has signed an agreement to terminate the contract with the club. During his time at Boca, Marcos played in more than 100 games, helping the team win 4 championship trophys. We thank him for his professionalism and dedication to the club and wish him all the best in the future."

According to ESPN, the direct reason for Rojo's termination was a serious conflict with the coaching staff. Head coach Miguel Angel Russo has decided to drive the former Manchester United defender from the first team along with Marcelo Sarach and Christian Lema. These three players have been forced to train alone and completely separate from the team.

Since defeating Lanus in a penalty shootout in May this year - that was Rojo's last appearance for Boca - the team has been in a constant downturn. In the 2025 Club World Cup, Boca's performance was disappointing and was even tied 1-1 by the semi-professional team Auckland City. Back in the Argentine League, they still had no wins in the second stage and their form continued to decline.

Rojo joined Manchester United from Portugal Sports for a transfer fee of £16 million in 2014, with the then coach being Louis Van Gaal. During his time with the Red Devils, he played more than 120 times for the team and won three championships with the team.

Rojo, now 35, is facing major challenges in his career, and finding new clubs will become a problem he urgently needs to solve.
